First Appointment! Hooray for Heartbeat!

So I had my very first appointment today with Leeanne, our midwife. She is one of the many people we will see in this community practice. They all work together to provide care at this OB. Essentially you have two doctors, and a team of midwives, ultrasound techs etc. So today I got my general physical, pap smear, blood draw & ultrasound. Leeanne originally tried to see if we could hear a heartbeat with the portable doppler, but baby was hiding then. She told me not to worry. I was ok with that since the idea of a "real" ultrasound (either transvaginal or old-school ultrasound) was mere minutes away.

Leenanne left to let me get my top portion dressed (the bottoms I left off in case I needed a transvaginal ultrasound), but when she came back she said that the tech had an emergency & had to leave. I was crushed, and on the verge of tears. They wanted to reschedule me AGAIN. I almost lost it because they've rescheduled me twice already for the first trimester ultrasound, and I was really looking forward to it this morning. I think Leeanne sensed an impending meltdown or just maybe my irrational anger that might burst forth, so she was like, "well, I'm not an official tech with the u/s but, we can see what we can see. I know how to do the basic things like measuring, and giving an EDD. Let's give it a try. We want to see that heartbeat!" . I was so relieved! I felt kind of bad, but I think she sensed my dissapointment. I only get one day off during the week and that is Tuesdays, so she was really sweet to at least see what we could see.

We went in there and there our little bean was! Wiggling, and heart beating away. We are so amazed and overjoyed. Originally, based on my last period, I thought I was 11 weeks. However, based on the baby's measurements we are thinking 10 weeks roughly. So baby is younger than we thought, but that is ok! It just means that everything took a bit longer in the beginning. Leeanne laughed at how cooperative our little bean was and we were so thankful that she took that extra time to let us take a look.

That is the update. Our next appointment is May 10th at 16 weeks. Thank you for all your prayers and well-wishes! Grow baby grow!
